Slithu Ynza's discussion of Slithu names; phoneme list (W) NAMES: Slithu names usually start with S, I, Ch, or U for males and Tc, J, N, or Y for females, and come in two parts. The first part is his/her given name, the one his parents named him at birth, and is usually two or three syllables long. The second part is which First Family he is/he is descended from. There is an understood `of the family' in the middle of the two names. Consonants: ch j th s stops: k g t b v m n l r h y w Aspirated glides Hy and Hw are common. Slithu Literary Traditions Slithu poetry is, of all the races', the strongest on rhyme. Their favorite schemes are 4-line abcb or abac, 7-line abbacca, and 12-line abbacdcdefefabba. They are strong on comic verse as well. They also like epics of ancient days, usually changing meters and rhyme schemes several times through an epic for variety. --------------------- Proto-Briacite/Slithu phonology (W) Voicing and aspiration were not distinctive features of consonants; length and stress were apparently not distinctive features of vowels. Consonants: Roman consonants which represent voiced sounds in European langs here represent fricatives, and those which there represent unvoiced sounds here represent stops. g represents palatal fricative - same point of articulation as k/g stops in English, but fricative. z laminodental (?) fricative j sh of English, j of French d interdental fricative (thorn, edh) v labiodental fricative (/f/, /v/) n nasal fricative (can't be produced by humans) tj affricate (as ch in English) ts affricate (as z in German, c in Esperanto or Hungarian) pf affricate (as pf in German) Stops: k palatal stop (as in European langs) t dental/interdental stop f labiodental stop p bilabial stop s laminodental (?) stop m nasal stop (not possible for humans - except by holding one's nose) l liquid (usually with flat of tongue, not tip as in English) b bilabial trill (i.e., raspberry) Vowels: (front unrounded, back rounded) i front, high /I/ a front, low /ae/ u back, high /U/ o back, low /D/ i~, a~, u~, and o~ are nasals.
